Master of Pharmacy

(MPharm)

Course code: M1130

Location: Murdoch campus
Availability: Internal
Duration: Two years full-time or part-time equivalent

This course aims to produce graduates who will be professional in their approach to providing quality primary health care as pharmacists. The course concentrates on a strong grounding in the pharmaceutical sciences with key learning in the pharmacy practice areas and a strong practicum component. Flexible modes of delivery will be utilised and students will be exposed to a wide variety of clinical experience in both hospital and community settings prior to graduation. Emphasis will be placed on professional competence in providing high quality community pharmacists for registration in Australia.

Employment Prospects: Findings from recent studies consistently show that there is a shortage of pharmacists in Australia and world-wide.

Admission Requirements: Completion of a Bachelors degree in a scientific discipline is required. An equivalent of three Murdoch points in each of the following six areas should be included: Chemistry, Human Biology, Physiology/Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Mathematics/Statistics.

If the six areas were not covered in your degree it is possible to study appropriate units in order to satisfy the pre-requisites and allow entry to the Master of Pharmacy. The Postgraduate Certificate and the Postgraduate Diploma in Pharmacy Entry are provided in order that students can gain a formal qualification whilst meeting the Master of Pharmacy pre-requisites.

Special Requirements: National Police Clearance is required prior to enrollment in the Master of Pharmacy course. Domestic students (Australian citizens, permanent residents, permanent humanitarian visa holders, and NZ citizens): National Police Clearance can obtained from your local police station. International students: you are required to provide Police Clearance from your home country.

A current First Aid Certificate is advisable and will be required prior to registration as a pharmacist.

English Requirements: To comply with professional accreditation requirements, students for whom English is not their first language, and all International students, must have IELTS overall score 7.0 with no band less than 6.5 prior to an offer of entry into the Master of Pharmacy.

Professional Recognition: For registration as a pharmacist in Western Australia you are required to undertake 2500 hours of supervised pharmacy employment; 500 hours are to be completed prior to graduation and 2000 hours after graduation. Other Australian states have similar requirements.

500 hours can be completed before graduation and for those enrolled in the Master of Pharmacy can be started up to 3 months before the course starts. While finding a 500 hour position is your responsibility, we will provide assistance.

2000 hours are undertaken in the year following successful completion of the Master of Pharmacy course. The Pharmaceutical Council of WA presents a series of seminars and workshops during this period. At the completion of the 2000 hours the Pharmaceutical Council of WA provides an oral exam which must be passed in order to be able to register as a Pharmacist. While finding a 2000 hour position is your responsibility, we will provide assistance.

See the Pharmaceutical Council of WA for more information on the supervised practical experience and for links to Pharmaceutical Authorities in other Australian States.

Articulation with Other Courses: A Biomedical Science degree articulates well into the Master of Pharmacy. Articulation from other science degrees is possible if elective units are chosen carefully to cover the six pre-requisite areas. For those missing any of the areas entry into the Master of Pharmacy can be facilitated via the Postgraduate Certificate/Postgraduate Diploma in Pharmacy Entry.

Application process: Download the application form for Admission to Master of Pharmacy and follow the instructions on the last page. Domestic students should send the form to the Prospective Students and Admissions Centre, while International Students should send the form to Murdoch International. If you do not meet the pre-requisites for the Master of Pharmacy program you may be offered a place on the Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma in Pharmacy Entry to fulfill the required subject areas.

For information on the status of your application, Domestic Students should contact the Prospective Students and Admissions Centre and International Students should contact Murdoch International.

For advice on eligibility for admission to courses within the School of Pharmacy contact Robert Coltrona.

Deadline for applications: Applications are assessed at the end of May and November of each year, but we are currently keeping a shortlist of applicants for late offers in the event that space becomes available. Applications for future entry are received and assessed on a continuous basis.
